Who can sign up to volunteer?

Anyone who wants to be part of the Head of the Hooch regatta adventure!

Do I need rowing experience to volunteer?

No, not at all! There are numerous roles that only require your interest in being a part of the HoH regatta. We're seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with setup, staffing tents and tables, parking, and more. This huge, multi-day event has something for anyone who wants to participate. If you do have some rowing experience or expertise, there are specialized roles such as timers, course stewards, launch drivers, launch or recovery dock volunteers and so much more!

There is something for everyone!

How can my organization get involved?

Encourage your members and friends to volunteer, and/or come out and cheer! Reach out to volunteer[at]headofthehooch.org  to discover how your organization can play a part in this annual rowing event, the largest in the South!

Are there opportunities before or after the regatta?

Absolutely! This event is massive, and we need help in setting up the course, tents, placing signage, arranging tables, unpacking supplies, preparing computers/radio equipment, and more in the days leading up to the regatta. Likewise, after the regatta concludes, we'll need assistance in dismantling tents, packing equipment, and other tasks. Many helping hands make the workload lighter.

How can I get more involved with the regatta?

Look through the options and commit to as many volunteer opportunities that feel comfortable and work with your schedule. Most shifts are only 2-4 hours long. Select the volunteer role that aligns best with your capabilities. Some roles are more physically active and may involve walking or lifting, while others could involve manning a desk or area and engaging with rowers and the public by offering warm greetings, signing people in, or providing directions. Be sure to allow time to take in the atmosphere, stroll the bridges and watch some racing.

Are there other ways that I can give back to the community outside of volunteering at the event?

Absolutely! The ARC offers year-round volunteer opportunities, and we’re always on the lookout for dedicated volunteers. Feel free to email volunteer[at]headofthehooch.org to find out more.

Where can I park?

You can find several public parking garages in downtown Chattanooga. Please note that street parking will be quite limited as the waterfront area will be closed to cars. Demand for spaces in adjacent areas and parking lots will be high. Since you will be signing up for a specific volunteering time, we strongly recommend arriving at least 30-45 minutes early to ensure you find parking and have time to walk to the regatta’s volunteer tent to sign in.

Where do I go when I get to the venue?

All HoH volunteers must sign-in at the HoH volunteer tent. Here, you'll not only pick up your awesome HoH Volunteer vest but also have access to refreshments and bathroom facilities with running water. Additionally, the volunteer coordinating staff will provide you with essential information about your volunteer role, including who you'll be working with, where to be, and any job-specific instructions.

See venue maps.

What do I need to bring to my volunteer shift?

Wear comfortable clothing and suitable shoes for your assigned activity. There is no storage, so carry your phone & essentials in your pockets or small back pack. Since the weather can be unpredictable, it's wise to check the forecast and dress accordingly. The HoH is a rain or shine event!

Do I need to sign in and sign out for my shift?

Yes, please do. We want to welcome you to the event and give you the necessary information to make your experience a great one.  Then at the end of your shift (or at the end of the day), we want be able to express our gratitude for your commitment and hear any feedback from you about your experience. It’s also an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow volunteers and perhaps grab a bite to eat.

Who do I contact if I have a question at the venue?

If you have a questions upon arrival, feel free to ask one of the volunteer coordinators at the volunteer tent.  If they don’t know the answer, they will know who to contact.  While you’re at your volunteer assignment, approach one of the team leads in your area who should have a 2-way radio to communicate with the volunteer tent.

Is there a lost and found?

Yes, the volunteer tent will serve as the central location for any items that appear to be left behind.  Please turn them in as quickly as possible, or notify the volunteer desk via 2-way radio.

How does my affiliated organization get credit?

When signing up for Head of the Hooch volunteer assignments, be sure to mention your affiliated organization. We want to be able to extend our thanks to all volunteers and their supporting organizations for their valuable contributions to the success of the HoH regatta.
